Book Release: I Want to be Me by Dr. Gayathri Sampath

Gayathri’s story I Want to be Me, was selected as a winning title of the WriteFluence Singles Season III contest, October 2022.

Dr. Gayathri Sampath is a Mumbai girl to the core, with a Ph.D. in management. In her past life, she was a senior management consultant advising Fortune 500 companies, before she switched tracks to academics a decade ago. She is currently working with one of the fastest-growing universities in India as a professor of Strategy. She writes poems and plays for others and stories for herself and is working on her first fantasy fiction novel for young adults. Her stories have previously been published in several anthologies.

About the title:

The story narrates the trials and tribulations faced by Sheena, an intersex. Intersex is an umbrella term that describes bodies that fall outside the strict male/female binary. Sometimes doctors do surgeries on intersex babies and children to make their bodies fit binary ideas of “male” or “female”. Doctors always assign intersex babies a legal sex (male or female, in most states), but just like with non-intersex people, that doesn’t mean that’s the gender identity they’ll grow up to have. This brings up questions about whether or not it’s OK to do medical procedures on children’s bodies when it’s not needed for their health. It is estimated that up to 1.7 percent of the population has an intersex trait and that approximately 0.5 percent of people have clinically identifiable sexual or reproductive variations. This story is about these people finding their place in society.
